To California and Back with 4 Kids...

Aria Joy... What a doll! She found the day of driving to be quite long. She had a tough time falling asleep with so much fun activities going on around her in the van. That being said, Aria handled her first serious road trip quite nicely! Frequent stops like the one below were very helpful in stretching the legs and regrouping our attitudes:

Alister filling in on comic relief, as usual. This was his "Chick" shirt. He requested it specially for this trip. (We actually had the kids sleep in their traveling clothes the night before. I highly recommend this for early morning departures!)
.
We finally made it to CA! Here's Grandma Joan and Aubrey Jane looking more and more related each year.

Mangles everywhere! CHEESE! Grandma Joan with Jenny, David, Aria, Lori, Nicholas, Hannah, Aubrey, Tiffany, Alister and Austin. We're imagining our other cousins, Scott, Bradley and Eric being here with us!

Alister on a wall at Coit Tower in San Francisco. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful murals inside this tower that were painted during the Great Depression. It was about 90 degrees on this day, very unusual for San Francisco weather, but we rather enjoyed it!

S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien

Here we are, in the belly of the S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien, a WWII Liberty Ship. Since the twins were studying this very subject, we thought it a wonderful opportunity to tour this only remaining Liberty Ship. It was present on D-Day and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour. This is the signal from 4 flights down in the claustrophobic engine room. (This is the room they filmed parts of the "Titanic" movie from.)

And here's Austin at the other end of that control from the Engine room at the TOP of the ship on the Bridge. What a climb!

All three of the kids wanted to stay and play on this big gun on the bow of the ship. Alister is shown spinning the cranks that actually rotates the gun. We couldn't decide whether we should shoot the Golden Gate bridge, Pier 39, or perhaps the Bay Bridge, so we kept swiveling this massive thing around and around and around and all in the 90 degree weather. Whew!

These standees were in one of the holds "museum". There's Aubrey AKA Rosie the Riveter. 1/3 of this ship was assembled by women!

The Trip Home
We stopped somewhere in Southern OR at a lovely rest stop. This turned out to be our last bit of nice weather, too. The woods smelled like the most wonderful campground and the grass was soft and the tree stumps adventurous! Some time after this stop, we grew quite weary of the long drive. We had also taken time out for dinner in Eugene where the kids really enjoyed their first real Fajitas. I was driving along when my cell phone began to ring. I was puzzled when the caller ID showed "Steve" as the caller. Since Steve was sitting right next to me, I figured this might be interesting as I answered the call. In my rear view mirror I could see Austin covering his mouth and his eyes grinning and he spoke to me from the back of our van via Steve's cell phone. We did this several times, giggling and laughing about our goofy conversations. The battery finally went dead!

Aria really appreciated the chance to stretch her legs and pick flowers, sticks and debris off the ground.
